How To Choose A Homecoming Dress

The Fall and Winter months are often the busiest times of the school year. Football season is underway, preparations for Winter Formals have begun and yes – homecoming plans are also being made. Those plans often include a dance that coincides with a big football game. Of course, everybody who’s anybody is going to be attending that dance and they all want to look their best. Knowing which style of homecoming dress you have in mind takes a lot of the stress out of shopping for the event. But with so many to choose from, making that decision can be difficult. In this entry, we’re going to tell you about some of the more popular styles of homecoming dresses and which types are best for an occasion like this.

Long vs Short

Because homecoming dances tend to be less formal than Prom or Winter Formals, shorter style cocktail dresses are a better choice than long, elegant gowns. The ideal length is mid-thigh or mini-skirt style. However, some schools may have dress codes against short skirts so you might have to opt for a knee length one instead.

Color

Red and variations of red are going to be among the hot colors for Fall. Hues of blue are going to be very popular as well – including purple. But if you really want to stand out at your homecoming dance, opt for a dress in a neon color. Neon is has been hot all year round and that trend is continuing into the Fall. Be advised, tho – neon colors look best on people with darker skin tones.

Straps or No Straps

How about just one strap? That’s right – one shoulder dresses are very hot this Fall and you’re going to see a lot of them. One shoulder dresses are the best of both worlds. With them, you’re not completely covered like you would be with two straps and not completely bare like with strapless dresses. You get a happy medium that’s elegant and demure. Perfect!

Poofy or Simple Skirt

The choice is yours, depending on the look you’re trying to achieve. If you’re going to for a feminine, girly look – it’s all about the poof. Choose a dress with lots of tulle or netting under the skirt for maximum poofiness. If you want a sexier, sleeker look – a straight skirt is definitely the way to go. However, a classic A-line skirt gives you both. It’s just poofy enough to move and twirl when you do, but straight enough to be flatter without adding excess bulk.

In the end, the dress you choose is completely your decision – regardless of trends. One thing you should always keep in mind when buying a dress is your shape. You want to choose a dress that’s flattering to your figure – one that accentuates the positive and camouflages the not so positive. Choose a dress that makes you feel beautiful and you can never go wrong.
